5-MeO-DMT was first synthesized in 1936, and in 1959 it was isolated as one of the psychoactive ingredients of Anadenanthera peregrina seeds used in preparing Yopo snuff. It was once believed to be a major component of the psychoactive effects of the snuff, although this has recently been shown to be unlikely, due to the limited or sometimes even non-existent quantity contained within the seeds, which instead achieve their psycho-activity from the O-demethylated metabolite of 5-MeO-DMT, bufotenin. It is metabolized mainly by CYP2D6
Recently, interest has increased in understanding the clinical applications of psychedelic, entactogenic, and dissociative psychoactive drugs, such as psilocybin , DMT, LSD, MDMA , or ketamine in combination with psycho therapeutic support to promote improved mental health conditions . In particular, research has indicated favorable results in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, end of life conditions, and anxiety-related disorders. This research shows that while the therapeutic mechanisms are not fully understood, some factors have been correlated with improvement in mental health. These factors include the intensity of mystical experience occasioned by the psychedelic, the context in which the session was conducted (known as set and setting), the dose at which the drug is administered, psychological flexibility, connectedness, emotional breakthrough, and increased neural entropy
The Church of the Tree of Life, founded in California in 1971 by John Mann but now defunct, declared the use of 5-MeO-DMT to be a sacrament. From approximately 1971 to the late 1980s, 5-MeO-DMT was discreetly available to its members. Between 1970 and 1990 smoking of 5-MeO-DMT buy on parsley was probably one of the two most common forms of ingestion in the United States.
One of the unique properties of 5-MeO-DMT is the fast action and short duration of the psychedelic effects when compared to other psychedelics. “Research has shown that psychedelics given alongside psychotherapy help people with depression and anxiety. However, psychedelic sessions usually require 7 – 8 hours per session because psychedelics typically have a long duration of action,” says Alan K. Davis, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research fellow in the Behavioral Research Unit, at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “Because 5-MeO-DMT is short-acting and lasts approximately 30-90 minutes, it could be much easier to use as an adjunct to therapy because current therapies usually involve a 60 – 90 minute session.”
Last year, Davis published a study in Frontiers in Psychology that found that 5-MeO-DMT buy administered in a psycho-spiritual retreat setting produced comparable ratings of mystical experience as a high-dose psilocybin session in the laboratory setting. Another study by Davis that came out last year in The Journal of Psychopharmacology showed that 5-MeO-DMT had a safe profile of use and low risk for health and legal consequences.
